A bus drives down the street with parked cars on either side

The 1 California bus will see more frequent service to support its ridership.

Changes to Muni service will go into effect starting Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026. The goal is to make systemwide improvements in frequency and reliability and allow for smoother operations on several routes across San Francisco. We are also working to increase capacity to address crowding in a cost-neutral manner.

These updates are based on rider feedback, operator input and service data. Some changes add more frequent service or more room where crowding is highest. Others adjust routes, stops or schedules to help buses and trains run more reliably.

Changes include:

  • More frequent service on the 1 California and N Judah
  • More room on busy routes during peak hours, like the 49 Van Ness-Mission
  • Changes to support students returning to school
  • Route, stop and schedule updates to improve reliability

Read on for details!

More frequent service, larger buses

  • Buses on the 1 California will arrive every nine minutes instead of every ten minutes. Buses will come every four to five minutes between Presidio and downtown.
  • During peak hours, the N Judah will arrive every nine minutes instead of every 10 minutes. We also aim to reduce congestion at the La Playa terminal as part of these changes.
  • All 5R Fulton Rapid trips will use 60-foot buses instead of a mix of 40- and 60-foot buses. The route will run every 10 minutes. The larger buses will provide more room than the route had before the February 2026 service changes.
  • Muni trips on several other routes including the 22 Fillmore and 29 Sunset will see added some capacity hours. This is also true for the 38R Geary Rapid and 49 Van Ness-Mission during morning peak hours. And the 29 Sunset will notice some added capacity in the evening.

Service changes for students going back to school

8AX

We’re now providing a one-seat ride from Visitacion Valley to Francisco Middle School. Students previously had to transfer from the 8AX to get to school.

Starting at the end of the month, a few morning 8AX Bayshore Express trips will serve the 8 Bayshore stops north of Broadway to accommodate this change.

28R 19th Avenue Rapid

The 28R 19th Avenue Rapid will now serve 19th Avenue and Eucalyptus Drive. This will bring service closer to Lowell High School and provide another option for students.

We’re also adding a 28R 19th Avenue Rapid stop at Eucalyptus Drive. We expect this to be popular with Lowell students.

66 Quintara, 37 Corbett and K Ingleside

We are adjusting service slightly at three middle schools: Hoover Middle School, Rooftop School and Aptos Middle School.

Students at Hoover Middle School and Rooftop School will use the typical 66 Quintara and 37 Corbett service, respectively, at their regular stops.

Aptos Middle School students can take the K Ingleside outbound to the Ocean Ave. & CCSF Pedestrian Bridge stop and board the 8 Bayshore at Geneva Ave. & Howth St.

Reliability improvements

22 Owl

The 22 Owl schedule will be more reliable. The schedule is better aligned with travel times. It will continue to provide service every 30 minutes.  We encourage riders who use this route to check the schedule for updates.

Why we're making these changes

Rider feedback, operator input and service data helped inform these updates. Some changes add service where there are more riders. Others adjust routes, stops and schedules to help Muni buses and trains run more smoothly.

These changes use schedule efficiencies to improve service without adding to Muni operating costs.

What this means for riders

Riders may notice shorter waits, more room on busy routes and more reliable trips. Some students will have better service to school. Riders on a few routes may also notice new trip times, stop information or routing.

We know even small service changes can affect daily routines. We will continue monitoring service and adjusting to improve the rider experience.

These service changes are cost neutral. Due to the SFMTA’s budget gap, we cannot increase overall Muni service.

Without new funding, we may have to eliminate about one-quarter of Muni service. Read more about the SFMTA’s budget and potential solutions on our budget webpage.
