This two-day event offers a rare opportunity to explore Muni’s past, present and future. The fun includes free rides on vintage streetcars and buses departing from the event. Plus, you can explore a range of interactive exhibits and family-friendly activities.
The details:
- When: Saturday, Sept. 20 to Sunday, Sept. 21 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Where: 77 Steuart Street – at Don Chee Way Plaza and the Market Street Railway Museum

Ride vintage transit to Pier 39 and more
A boat tram offering rides for Muni Heritage Weekend.
Step aboard historic streetcars and buses spanning 25 to more than 140 years of service.
Explore the Embarcadero shuttle loop from the plaza to Pier 39 and back, featuring beloved vehicles like:
- Streetcar #1 (1912): The first publicly owned streetcar in the U.S.
- “Dinky” car 578 (1896): San Francisco’s oldest operating streetcar.
- Boat tram #233 (1934, Blackpool, England): Hop on our iconic “boat” tram – one of only four vehicles of its kind around the world.
You can also ride historic motor coaches on a shuttle loop to the Caltrain Station and back. And hop aboard historic trolleys for trips on two different loops: one to Columbus Avenue and one to Van Ness Avenue.

Interactive vintage vehicle installation
Climb aboard a retired, motorized cable car in the plaza and snap a photo with this iconic symbol of San Francisco. Explore other historic vehicles on display, including a 1969 Muni GMC Coach, an ’80s SamTrans Gillig bus, a VTA coach and the Greyhound Scenic Cruiser from the Pacific Bus Museum.
Take a stroll around the plaza and the Embarcadero to see these moving pieces of transit history up close—perfect for families, transit fans and anyone who loves vintage vibes!

Getting there
There are several ways to get to the Muni Heritage Weekend event, and we’re here to help! Your options include:
- Muni Buses: The 1 California, 2 Sutter, 9 San Bruno, 12 Folsom/Pacific and 14 Mission/14R Mission Rapid, routes will get you close to the event.
- F-line historic streetcars: Both the Steuart Street stop and the Ferry building stop are within steps of the museum. It’s located on ‘Don Chee Way’, the streetcar right-of-way between Steuart Street and Embarcadero.
- California Street cable cars: From the cable car terminal at Market & Drumm Streets at the Hyatt Regency, the museum is easy to reach by walking one block to the end of Market Street, and a half block down Steuart Street to the museum.
- East Bay riders: Take AC Transit F, N, or L/O lines to the Transit Center, or ride the ferry to the Ferry Building and walk to the event.
- North Bay riders: Golden Gate Transit buses to the Transit Center or ferries to the Ferry Building provide easy access.
