In the coming weeks, SFMTA and Public Works crews will begin to add upgraded boarding islands at the K Ingleside stops at San Leandro Way (westbound) and Fairfield Ave (westbound)
These changes are part of the part of the K Ingleside Rapid Project.
Longer boarding islands coming to two more stops – construction starts Friday, September 26
Beginning Friday, September 26, we expect San Francisco Public Works crews to begin construction on upgraded boarding islands for the K Ingleside at two inbound stops toward Embarcadero Station. Crews will demolish the existing islands and replace them with wider, longer boarding islands. The following dates may change.
Locations:
September 26 – October 1: Ocean Ave & San Leandro Way. Crews will upgrade the boarding island in the inbound direction toward Embarcadero Station. The outbound stop was upgraded last year.
October 2 - 7: Ocean Ave & Fairfield Way. Crews will upgrade the boarding island in the inbound direction toward Embarcadero Station. The outbound stop was upgraded last year.
We expect this construction to last about two weeks. We expect construction to take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day.
This construction is part of our work to lengthen and widen boarding islands for the K Ingleside at four stops. This change improves accessibility and safety for riders.
Once all stops are upgraded, we will operate two-car trains on the K Ingleside in both directions. This will double the capacity on Ocean Avenue. That reduces crowding and provides more seating for riders on K Ingleside trains.
Muni Service Impacts:
The K Ingleside will continue to operate during construction, but there will be temporary changes to stops.
- Once the stop at Ocean Ave & San Leandro Way begins construction, the stop will be closed. Instead, riders can use nearby stops at Junipero Serra Blvd & Ocean Ave or Ocean Ave & Aptos Ave.
- Once the stop at Ocean Ave & Fairfield Way is under construction, it will be closed. Instead, riders can use nearby stops at Ocean Ave & Aptos Ave or Ocean Ave & Dorado Terrace.
- We expect both stops to reopen for service starting Saturday, October 11.
- All outbound stops toward Balboa Park will remain in service.
Traffic Impacts:
- While each island is under construction, Ocean Avenue traffic will be limited to one westbound lane on the affected block. However, there is no planned impact to traffic in the other direction. Drivers should use caution and be mindful of workers directing traffic.
- While the island at Ocean Ave & San Leandro Way is under construction, the entrance to the alleyway on Ocean Avenue between San Leandro Way and Santa Ana Avenue will be closed.
- We expect that this entrance will be closed 24 hours per day until construction is complete.
- Residents can continue to access the alleyway via Darien Way.
- Once the island is completed, the entrance will be reopened. This will allow traffic to turn into the alleyway from both directions.
- While the island at Ocean Ave & Fairfield Way is under construction, people driving will not be able to turn directly from Ocean Avenue onto Fairfield Way. They will also not be able to turn from Fairfield Way onto Ocean Avenue.
- We expect that these turns will be prohibited 24 hours per day until construction of the island at Ocean Ave & Fairfield Way is complete.
- People driving can continue to access Fairfield Way via Keystone Way. They may also access Fairfield way via Lakewood Avenue.
- Once the island is completed, the entrance will reopen for traffic in both directions.
Parking impacts:
- Temporary impacts to parking are likely. Watch for temporary signs.
Noise impacts:
- There may be some noise during brief excavation work.
This quick-build implementation follows the SFMTA Board’s approval of the K Ingleside Rapid Project in March 2024. We expect to implement more quick-build improvements in the coming months. These include an upgraded boarding island at one remaining stop: Ocean Ave & Miramar Ave inbound toward Embarcadero Station.
