6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project - August 2020 Update

Update for August 2020

Vibrant city neighborhoods rely on local businesses where residents, workers and visitors can shop, eat and connect with others. The 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project is focused on ensuring that the corridor remains lively and reflects a commitment to those who have made this area their home.

SFMTA staff recently completed a second round of 6th Street merchant conversations to keep everyone informed about the progress of this project and invite them to participate in further discussions about minimizing the impacts of construction once that begins later this year.

On September 10 from 4-9 pm, Stevenson Street will be activated as part of San Francisco's Shared Spaces program involving RecPark, Office of Employment and Workforce Development, the Transgender and Filipino cultural districts, and several local businesses and property owners. There will be food provided to residents, entertainment, and rehearsals from nearby theater companies – all socially distanced, of course.

Additionally, the San Francisco Parks Alliance continues to work on bringing string and stage lighting to the 500 block of Stevenson Street through a grant provided by SFMTA, the Mid-Market Community Business District, OEWD and donations from the neighboring Zendesk.

Moving Forward on 6th Street

During the public health emergency related to COVID-19, the SFMTA is making important changes to key agency operations. Although there is a shelter-in-place order, we are continuing work on the construction design and mitigation phases for the 6th Street project to ensure that we minimize disruption as much as possible.

The 6th Street project team will continue to be available throughout this time. For project-related questions, please contact Shayda.Haghgoo@sfmta.com.
