How we're learning from past projects and using best practices

The Train Control Upgrade Project (TCUP) is carefully envisioned, planned and managed to maximize lessons learned from past SFMTA projects, other agencies’ experiences and industry best practices.

 

Project Phasing:

Careful project phasing is one way we are implementing lessons learned from the past. For example, the first phase of the project - the Initial Technology Demonstration phase - is envisioned as a proving ground for a fully functional new Communications-Based Train Control system on a portion of the on-street rail right of way, before installing it in the subway and extending it to all surface Metro segments.

 

Support-Focused, Lifecycle Management

We negotiated supplier support early in the competitive bidding process to keep hardware and software up to date and create contractual incentives for suppliers to partner in the success of the system.

 

Performance-Based Contracts

We plan to award contracts based on product quality and long-term performance goals rather than short-term construction issues.

 

Risk Management

From the start, our project management approach is rooted in proactive risk analysis and reduction. We prioritize anticipating risks early and planning for solutions.
