Quick-Build Implementation: San Jose Avenue, J Church Safety and Accessibility Project 

Phase 2 Quick-Build Implementation, Starting as early as Friday, April 5, 2024 

Much of the installation of the quick-build improvements have been completed on San Jose Avenue as part of the J Church Safety and Accessibility Project! The next step is for crews to paint the transit lanes red. To limit J Church service interruptions and due to crew availability, this work will happen overnight on the weekends starting Friday night, April 5th.

Below is an overview of what to expect during each of the four weekends in April.

  • Overview of the work by blocks along San Jose Avenue:
    • Cotter Street to Ocean Avenue
      • Painting the stenciled transit lane red
  • Traffic impacts:
    • Temporary impacts to parking aren’t expected but please watch for signs.
  • Overnight noise impacts:
    • The painting of the transit lanes is expected to be minimally noisy as crews will be working with paint and rollers.
  • Muni service impacts:
    • Muni service won’t be impacted during quick build implementation.

Phase 1 Quick-Build Implementation, Started Monday, March 18, 2024 

Implementation started Monday, March 18, 2024 of the quick-build improvements on San Jose Avenue as part of the J Church Safety and Accessibility Project. Following the approval of the project in October 2023, the quick-build phase is the first step of implementation of the transit and safety improvements that will be added along San Jose Avenue from Ocean Avenue to Cotter Street (near I-280). Full capital construction is anticipated to begin in 2025. 

Below is an overview of the work completed during the first phase of quick-build implementation: 

  • Overview of the work by multi-block segments:
    • Cotter Street to Havelock Street (including intersections)
      • Painted transit lane stencils and left turn arrows (approximately 1 week of work)  
      • Converted the 4-inch solid white lane line to 8 inches (approximately 2 weeks of work)
    • Santa Ynez Avenue to John V. Young Lane (including intersections)
      • Painted transit lane stenciling and left turn arrows (approximately 1 week of work)  
      • Converted the 4-inch solid white lane line to 8 inches (approximately 2 weeks of work)
    • Ocean Avenue to Geneva Avenue (including intersections)
      • Painted left turn arrows near the Ocean Avenue intersection (approximately 1 week of work)
  • Muni service impacts:
    • Muni service wasn't impacted during the majority of quick build implementation.
