At the May 19 SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously voted to approve the updated proposals of the 29 Sunset Improvement Project – Phase Two.
These proposals were based on feedback that we received from hundreds of community members over the past two years. They are designed to deliver:
- Better reliability: by decreasing delays, buses will be more reliable. That means fewer gaps between buses, which would decrease crowding and reduce pass-ups of riders.
- Shorter travel times: average speeds on the 29 Sunset are as low at 5 m.p.h. Quicker trips on the 29 Sunset would get riders where they are going faster. They would also save money by requiring fewer buses to maintain the same level of bus service.
- More comfortable and visible bus stops: adding better signage, lighting and shelters to some bus stops would make them easier to find and more comfortable.
- Improved traffic safety for everyone who travels on the corridor. Six streets on the route are part of the High Injury Network, which is the 13% of city streets where 74% of all severe and fatal traffic collisions occur.
More reliable, quicker service coming soon
Expect to see benefits from some quick-build elements in the next year, including:
Bus stop removals: To make the route more reliable, we worked with community members to identify some bus stops for removal. These bus stops are typically close to another stop and have fewer riders since they are not near major destinations or transit connections. Currently, many stops on the 29 Sunset are closer than the 800-foot minimum distance recommended by the SFMTA’s stop spacing guidelines. That makes the route less reliable. When a bus starts to get delayed, closely-spaced bus stops can make the bus very delayed.
Bus stop relocations: At several locations, we will adjust the location of the bus stops to reduce delays or provide a more comfortable waiting environment.
Additionally, the Board of Directors directed the project team to continue working on project designs, including on San Bruno Avenue, which we will continue to do.
