Thanking Muni's Safe Drivers

Friday, December 11, 2015

Muni operator and safe driver Elisha

We recently honored Muni operators including Elisha, shown here, for 15+ years of safe driving.

Navigating a bus, streetcar or other transit vehicle through hilly San Francisco is no easy feat.

But about 300 Muni operators have done it safely for at least 15 years each.

Last month we honored our top operators during our annual Safe Driver Awards. A record number of operators received the award this year for exemplifying the SFMTA's commitment to moving people safely in San Francisco.

Receiving a Safe Driver Award is a milestone achievement. To be honored, an operator must drive nearly 2,000 hours annually on city streets without causing a collision, and they have to do this for a minimum of 15 years. This year we honored over 40 men and women with over 25 years of safe driving experience. Four of them – Duane Allen, Lonnie Moore Jr., Oliverio Valle and Abraham Sherman – have at least 35 years each navigating city streets safely.

SFMTA Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin referred to Muni's safe drivers as “exceptional… the best of the best,” noting that even as city streets have become more challenging to navigate, the ranks of safe drivers continues to grow.

In addition to the award, we're also honoring Muni's safe drivers with an ad campaign now on Muni vehicles. Look out around the city for these ads featuring beautiful portraits of the drivers.

We thank our safe drivers for their exemplary work moving San Francisco.
