Driveway Red Zones Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who can apply for a driveway red zone?

Property owners or renters who have access to a property's garage (assuming it fronts the curb) may apply for a driveway red zone.

My driveway red zone is faded. How can I request a repaint?

The Driveway Red Zone Program is a one-time service; the SFMTA does not maintain the zones. Repainting a driveway red zone requires submitting a new application, along with an application fee and an installation fee. Please reapply here

What is the time frame for having my driveway red zone painted or repainted?

Each site is surveyed within 30 days after the application fee is paid. Once the survey is completed, you will receive an automated email with our recommendations and an invoice for the installation fee. The installation normally occurs approximately 4-6 weeks after the payment has been received, depending on the workload of the installation crews and weather conditions.

Why has my driveway red zone been greyed out?

When the SFMTA determines that a driveway red zone is no longer enforceable, a driveway red zone may be painted grey. Driveway red zones without an SFMTA stencil, or those that have been altered or significantly faded, are no longer enforceable. Please reapply here.

What should I do if my driveway red zone was damaged by a city sponsored or PG&E project?

The responsible entity or contractor may contact the Curb Access Team at ccp@sfmta.com to arrange for repainting and cover the associated costs. Please include photos of the curb with the property visible in the image.

What is the process for addressing curb repairs prior to driveway red zone installation?

Please contact San Francisco Public Works to complete the permit and repair process.

Beware Color Curb Scams

The SFMTA has received tips about fraudulent curb paint enterprises that illegally paint address numbers on the curb for a fee. The SFMTA does not paint address numbers on the curb nor is this practice sanctioned by the SFMTA in any way. One such fraudulent group goes under the name of “Community Services”, “Community Address Painting Service” or similar names. They are not a legitimate service.

How do you report illegal parking in a driveway red zone?

Report zone abuse through 311.

How do I report illegally painted driveway red zone?

If you suspect a driveway red zone has been painted illegally, please use 311and report the location. You can also email a photograph with the location to ccp@sfmta.com.
