There are two types of residential parking tools that can improve parking turnover and availability:

Time limits with RPP
2-hour RPP: enforced Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM
- Residents with a permit are exempt from the time limit, meaning they do not need to move after 2 hours and may park all day.
- Visitors without a permit must move after 2 hours, Monday to Friday from 8 am-6 pm.
4-hour RPP: enforced Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM
- Residents with a permit are exempt from the time limit meaning they do not need to move after 4 hours, they may park all day.
- Visitors without a permit must move after 4 hours, Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM.

Pay or RPP Permit: enforced Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM
In 2018, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) added Pay or Permit Parking as a new regulation type to the longstanding RPP program to better serve residents of and visitors to San Francisco’s neighborhoods. Pay or Permit Parking combines the benefits of residential parking restrictions with the benefits of paid parking: making it easier for residents and visitors to park on blocks in high-density, high-demand residential areas near major attractions, while preserving the residential permit system and generating revenue to support transit service.
- Residents with a permit are exempt from payment, meaning they may park all day without paying for the meter/pay station.
- Visitors without a permit must pay for parking at the pay station, online or by phone, Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
Here are some examples of the signage:
2-Hour Parking Time Limit with RPP Area S Exemption. This means that drivers without an RPP Area S permit must leave the parking space after 2 hours. However, Area S permit holders are not required to vacate the space after this time.
Pay or Permit Parking Sign with RPP Area HV Exemption. This indicates that drivers without an RPP Area HV permit must pay at the meter, while Area HV permit holders do not have to pay.
How do I apply for RPP?
- Visit the Residential Parking Permit (RPP) website for more information about RPP permits and obtain a permit online.
- Visit the SFMTA Customer Service Center at 11 South Van Ness Avenue, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, to obtain a permit in person. to obtain a permit in person.
- Note - Northeast Mission permittees may make monthly payments at the Customer Service Center.
- Permits are limited to 1 (one) per driver with the license and vehicle registered to the address in the Northeast Mission.
Additional Parking Regulations
- Free, 4-hour time limits
- Everyone must move their vehicle after 4 hours.
- Enforced Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM.
- Paid parking
- New meters/paystations could potentially start at $1.00/hour.
- Enforced Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 6 PM.
- No time limit; drivers can pay to park all day.
