How to apply for loading and short-term parking

Share this:

The following steps describe the application process from start to finish for a new loading or short-term parking zone.

Decide what zone is right for you

Review our options. If you have questions about whether you are eligible for loading or short-term parking or what type of zone is best for your business or organization’s needs, please contact the Curb Access team before you apply.

Apply and pay the application fee

To apply for a loading or short-term parking zone please visit the Curb Zone Application Webpage or download a paper application and mail it to the Curb Access team. If applicable pay the application fee to start the process.

Work with staff

Staff will reach out to applicants to discuss their needs and conduct a site assessment. Staff will then prepare legislation for the proposed curb zone. Please email ccp@sfmta.com if you have not received any correspondence 30 days after the application fee has been paid (if applicable).

Public notice and comment period

Staff will schedule your curb zone change for the required 10-day public notice and comment period.

Results

After the 10-day comment period, staff will review all comments received. Staff may amend your request or hold it back for further discussion depending on the feedback we get during the comment period. Otherwise, it will be recommended for formal approval by the City Traffic Engineer who has the authority to make the final decision.

Installation

If your request is approved and it’s a zone that requires payment for installation an invoice will be sent. Once payment is received, staff will begin the installation process.  For fee-exempt zones or zone types that do not require payment, the installation process will begin automatically after approval by the City Traffic Engineer.

For blocks that don’t have meters, it usually takes 6 to 8 weeks after the installation fee is paid (if applicable) for a curb zone to be installed. Some factors may delay installation such as weather and holidays. There is an additional technical review for metered blocks that adds about 4 weeks to the installation process for a total of around 12 weeks.
