33 Ashbury Overhead Wiring and Pole Replacement Project

Project Introduction

33 Stanyan Pole Replacement and Overhead Wire Reconstruction Project – Phase 2 began February, 2017 to reduce the on-going maintenance burden on this trolley coach line. Under the  $5.3 Million Project approved by Board directors, Contractor Balfour Beatty Rail will replace the existing 40+ years old trolley poles and overhead contact system that provides power to the Muni 33 Ashbury trolley coach line on 18th Street between Castro and Market Streets. This work also includes improving pedestrian safety and accessibility at 18th Street at Oakwood, Lapidge and Lexington streets by installing new ADA curb ramps. In partnership with PG&E, new LED street lights will be installed to increase safety apart of the project. The work from Mission to Castro Streets has been completed in 2018. The project will resume replacing the overhead wiring from Castro to Market Streets in fall 2018 and is estimated to be complete early 2019.
