San Francisco Secures $292,000 Grant for Community-Based Transportation Plan in the Bayview

Tuesday, February 6, 2018

San Francisco —The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all ground transportation in the city, today joined District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen to announce it has been awarded $292,000 in state funding to develop a community-based transportation plan in the Bayview.

Working with District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen, the SFMTA applied for competitive state funding through Caltrans’ Sustainable Planning Grant Program, funded by SB1. Key to the city’s application was a two-year community-based planning initiative that will focus on creating solutions to the needs identified by the Bayview’s existing communities. Caltrans awarded the SFMTA with $292,149 to partner with the community and respond to the Bayview’s unique transportation needs.

“For too many years, Bayview transportation services have been under-resourced,” said District 10 Supervisor, Malia Cohen. “I am proud to collaborate with the SFMTA and grateful for this grant, which creates a tremendous opportunity both to remedy past planning decisions and to manifest promises to a neighborhood that deserves dynamic transit options.”

The Bayview Community-Based Transportation Plan will develop a community-supported vision of transportation in the Bayview, building on previous planning efforts and preparing for anticipated development in the neighborhood. In the Bayview alone, more than 13,500 new residential units are in development. It will be imperative for the city to invest in the Bayview community that allows existing communities to grow in place while minimizing the impacts from future growth.

“With this grant, the SFMTA will be empowering the people and businesses of the Bayview to define their own transportation needs and select the solutions," said SFMTA Director of Transportation, Ed Reiskin. “This community-based approach to transportation planning will emphasize strong community engagement and collaboration to ensure that the Bayview is given both a voice, and a choice, in its future.”

To ensure robust public participation, the city will partner with community-based organizations to yield roadmap for the city to deliver much-needed projects in the neighborhood.
