Spear Street Between Market and Mission Will Become Two-Way

On April 26, the SFMTA will start work to convert Spear Street between Market and Mission streets from one-way to two-way. This means that Spear Street between Market and Mission Streets will go from two southbound lanes to one southbound and one northbound lane. This change will improve vehicle circulation by providing an alternate route for private vehicles to access Market Street eastbound toward Steuart Street. Private vehicle access to Market Street is limited as part of the Better Market Street project’s “Car-Free Market Street,” approved in 2019.

Once the two-way conversion is complete, motorists will be able to travel northbound on Spear Street from Mission Street to Market Street where they will be required to turn right onto Market Street eastbound to Steuart Street. Left turns from Spear Street will be restricted in compliance with Car-Free Market Street.

These changes involve installing new bi-directional traffic signs and striping as well as changing the direction of the commercial loading/parking spaces along the east side of the street. Approximately nine parking spaces will be removed and the change in direction of the parking stalls will require the removal of two commercial loading/parking spaces. The white zone in front of 55 Spear Street and the blue zone at the corner of Spear and Market streets will remain in place. There will be no changes to parking or loading on the west side of the street.

We plan to begin the two-way conversion on April 26. Work will take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. We anticipate that changes to the street will be completed within approximately five business days. Street use during implementation will consist of the following:

  • Both southbound lanes will remain open for use until the work is complete
  • The white zone in front of 55 Spear will not be impacted and will remain open for use
  • There will be no detours related to implementation
  • Access to the blue zone and commercial loading spaces on the east side of the street will be limited
  • Parking and loading on the west side of the street will remain open

During this time, access to commercial loading spaces and the blue zone on the east side of Spear Street will be limited as work progresses. Access to the white zone in front of 55 Spear Street will not be restricted.

We are submitting information to third-party navigation apps. Please remember to be especially cautious while driving, walking, cycling or otherwise traveling on Spear Street between Market and Mission Streets for the first couple of weeks in May as drivers become accustomed to the change.
