What’s happening with Cayuga Slow Streets
The Cayuga Slow Street team is excited for a new collaboration between SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and the SF Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) stormwater management program called “Transform the Storm”. The goals of this partnership are to focus investments where agency priorities overlap, advance changes to the street that boost climate resilience, and improve how our agencies communicate and engage with the public.

Planning & Design Updates
After installing the first wave of Slow Streets measures in late 2023, the SFMTA collected traffic data along Cayuga Avenue to assess how the Slow Street corridor is performing and to help inform future design proposals. Cayuga generally meets Slow Street traffic volume targets, except around Balboa High School. Average speeds are relatively low but do not meet the Slow Streets Program target of 15 mph or below.
For more information, please take a look at the 2025 Cayuga Slow Street Evaluation Summary.
Additionally, SFPUC has identified five locations on or near Cayuga Avenue that are strong candidates for green infrastructure upgrades to slow and filter stormwater run-off and mitigate flooding in the area.

The project team is currently developing design proposals for both the Cayuga Slow Street and green infrastructure locations. Potential additions include rain gardens and more durable traffic calming elements, like concrete islands.
Outreach Updates
Over the past several months, SFMTA and SFPUC increased outreach to community and neighborhood groups, schools, places of worship, and residents. So far, we have heard general support for a focus on traffic safety and greening, including a desire for more robust Slow Street signs and additional traffic calming for schools and cross-streets. Outreach will continue through early 2026 and include tabling events, postering, targeted mailers, and in-person meetings.
Please take a few minutes to fill out SFPUC’s community survey to test your knowledge of green infrastructure and help inform the design process. You can access the link or QR code at the bottom of this update.
