Fillmore Street Transit and Safety Project

Giới thiệu Dự án (Project Introduction)

The 22 Fillmore is one of Muni’s busiest bus lines. It carries more than 20,000 people every day. It connects neighborhoods from the Marina to Mission Bay. And, the route plays a key role in keeping San Franciscans moving. Ridership is now 125% more than it was five years ago!

Recent Muni Forward improvements like 16th Street Improvement Project – Phase One and 16th Street Improvement Project – Phase Two cut travel times by up to 15%. Now we’re focusing on Fillmore Street: The stretch from Duboce Avenue through the Western Addition to Japantown.

This stretch of Fillmore is high demand. It’s a merchant-heavy area with frequent bus stops. It sees significant congestion and double parking. These issues slow down buses. They also make the street less safe for everyone, whether they’re riding Muni, walking, biking or driving. The Fillmore Street Transit and Safety Project aims to make Muni service faster and more reliable. We also aim to make Fillmore Street safer for all.

To do that, we’re exploring several possible changes:

  • Removing bus stops that are too close together to help buses move more efficiently
  • Adding transit bulbs to create wider sidewalks at stops so it’s easier and safer to board the bus. This also gives people walking more space on the busy corridor
  • Upgrading traffic signals to give buses more green lights and help them stay on time

These types of improvements have worked in other parts of the city. But we know every neighborhood is different. That’s why this project starts with listening. We want to hear from riders, neighbors and local businesses about what’s working and what could be better. Your feedback will help shape a draft plan we’ll share later this year.

As we move forward, we’ll keep the community informed and work to minimize disruptions. Construction would happen in stages. We’ll make sure to provide plenty of notice before any work begins.
