Our maintenance teams work hard all year long to make Muni safer and more reliable for our more than 500,000 daily riders.

We are proud to look back on the projects they completed through 2025 Fix It! Week and Fix It! Weekend programs.

During these events, Muni Metro shuts down early so crews can complete work that isn’t possible during regular service. This makes it safe for crews to access tunnels, trackways and platforms. The results: cleaner, safer and more dependable service for our riders.

A year of impact for our riders: Fix It! round-up

In 2025, our Fix It! program crews completed over 80 repair and infrastructure projects. Some of that work included:

  • Replacing more than 5,000 feet of overhead contact wire and rail. This makes Muni more reliable.
  • Flushing 34 standpipes to clear sand and sediment. This ensures water can flow in case of fire, enhancing station and transit safety.
  • Upgrading lighting throughout tunnels and stations. This improves visibility for riders and operators.

Crews worked across the subway to keep trains running and stations clean. They cleaned and maintained tracks, switches and tunnels. They also cleaned stations and platforms. This work helps trains run more smoothly, reduces delays and makes stations safer and more comfortable for riders.

Teams also checked safety systems, cleaned ventilation rooms and cleared drains to help prevent flooding and keep riders safe in an emergency.

Fix It! Weekends bring even more upgrades for riders

We are also proud to keep driving improvements during our shorter Fix It! Weekend closures. During these events in 2025, we partnered with PG&E to carry out work at our sites where they had a planned closure. We held our second Fix It! Weekend event in early December along the N Judah.

Our maintenance crews worked for more than 1124 hours on more than 39 projects during the 48-hour window in December. They inspected the Sunset tunnel’s roof, walls and portals and installed 80 lights. At boarding islands, they installed new signage, refreshed paint and repaired guardrails and glass blocks.

Staff also completed accessibility improvements. They installed new accessibility features, safety signs and guardrails.

At platforms, crews replaced old gap fillers and added aluminum tops and copper gutters. Our crews also refreshed and painted safety markings and repainted platform handrails. Crews also painted safety striping, including a two-day repainting of the double yellow lines throughout the N Judah corridor.

All of this work helps reduce breakdowns, improve reliability and ensure trains run smoothly even during busy periods.

We want to thank our amazing track maintenance teams, overhead line crews, signal shop, mechanics, electricians, engineers, painters, cleaners and inspectors whose hard work keeps Muni moving. Because of them, your next trip will be safer, more reliable and ready to take you to your next destination.
