The new 6 Hayes-Parnassus route starts running this Saturday – learn the details and what to expect from our summer service plan.
Reminder: Starting Saturday, June 21, changes are coming to Muni service across the city. Whether you’re commuting downtown, riding Rapid lines or using neighborhood routes, we want to make sure you’re prepared.
We will share an overview of what’s changing and new online tools that can help you plan your Muni trips.
We will also cover what to expect for each route that will see service changes.
What’s changing on June 21: An overview
New bus route will serve stops from two discontinued lines
The new 6 Hayes-Parnassus will replace the 6 Haight-Parnassus and 21 Hayes. This new route will combine stops on the discontinued 6 Haight-Parnassus route west of Masonic and stops on the discontinued 21 Hayes east of Masonic.
Multiple routes turn around at Market on weekdays
Three routes will turn back once they reach Market Street on weekdays: The 5 Fulton, 9 San Bruno and 31 Balboa. Riders are then able to transfer at Market Street to get to their destination. There, Muni buses will provide service on weekdays about every 3-4 minutes and trains will provide service about every two minutes.
Bus stop changes will help improve accessibility and reduce delays
There will also be other changes to Muni service implemented citywide on June 21. These additional changes aim to provide reliable service, reduce delays and improve safety and accessibility.
For more information on each change, see our service plan details section below.
We also hit the streets in a new episode of our Taken with Transportation podcast to walk you through some of the service changes. In “Transfers That Fit Our Budget,” we hop on a 5 Fulton bus and stroll over to Hayes Valley to help you understand the changes and how to navigate them. You can find the episode at our podcast webpage (SFMTA.com/Podcast) or wherever you listen.

Why these cuts are happening
Facing a $50 million shortfall in our upcoming budget cycle (July 2025 – June 2026), we’re making targeted cuts now to avoid deeper, more devastating reductions later. Thanks to your input this past spring, we decreased service reductions to just 2%, down from the originally proposed 4%.
Looking ahead, we are navigating a $322 million budget deficit that starts next year in July 2026. To bridge this gap, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce spending and be even more efficient. We are also working with our legislative partners on funding sources. Without new funding, the service changes we see now would be just the beginning. We would have to make much more significant cuts to Muni service if we cannot solve this budget crisis.
