New 60-foot Buses Expected Next Year

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Yesterday San Francisco and the SFMTA were honored to host U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx. His announcement of more than $9 million in federal funding for new Muni buses will be combined with nearly $2.5 million of local dollars to purchase 12 new 60-foot “articulated” buses. These are the largest buses in the Muni fleet and some of the oldest.

Held at the 24th Street Mission BART Station along busy Mission Street, the press conference offered many opportunities to see these hard-working vehicles as they travelled through the corridor. We look forward to seeing their replacements on the street in 2015.

These new buses, along with the replacement of the entire Muni bus fleet over the next five years, mean cleaner, more reliable service systemwide. The improvement of our transit system also supports the coming approximately 33% growth in jobs and residents that SF will see in the coming years. In order for our city to thrive, current and new residents need to have access to our strong economy. As Secretary Foxx pointed out, “Transportation is about more than getting from one point to another—it’s about getting from where you are to a better life.”
