With new, easier ways to pay, we are beginning to transition away from the MuniMobile app.

If you use MuniMobile, you might have seen this alert show up telling you about upcoming changes:

“ALERT: Effective 9/1/26, Single Ride Tickets will no longer be available in the MuniMobile app.  Pay with Clipper or tap your credit card directly at the Clipper reader (adult fares only)”

This signals the first phase of MuniMobile’s retirement. Transit riders now have more flexibility in how they can pay their fares. And with this next generation of Clipper, it’s never been easier to tap and pay. With new ways to pay your fare through the Clipper system, we will be gradually retiring features in the MuniMobile app. We expect to completely transition away from MuniMobile by mid-2027. Decommissioning the MuniMobile app is part of our efforts to reduce costs and be more efficient. It will save the SFMTA about $3 million over the next two fiscal years.

What's changing in MuniMobile on Sept. 1

  • No new single ride tickets can be purchased in the app starting Sept. 1, 2026.
  • Single rides purchased in the app before Sept. 1, 2026, will be valid for 30 days from the date of purchase.
  • For now, you’ll still be able to buy Muni Day Passes, cable car tickets, Lifeline passes and Visitor Passports (1-Day, 3-Day and 7-Day) in the app.

The benefits of paying with Clipper

As specific features leave the MuniMobile app, it’s important to know what you can use instead. In December 2025, an upgrade to the Clipper Card payment system brought new benefits to transit riders. Paying your fare is now even easier and more convenient:

  • Tap -to -pay with a debit card, credit card or your phone.
  • When you pay with Clipper, get a discount of up to $2.85 on each transfer between transit agencies within a two-hour ride period.
  • Add funds instantly to a Clipper account (as opposed to this taking several days).

Paying Muni Fare with your Phone

Muni vehicles and station fare gates now accept plastic too. You can tap a credit or debit card at Clipper readers to pay. You can even use cards loaded into your phone's digital wallet.

These benefits extend across the Bay Area. They cover Muni, BART, AC Transit, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, VTA, SamTrans and more. (Riders can always pay their fare in cash on Muni as well.)

And paying your fare is more important than ever. The SFMTA faces the largest financial crisis in the agency’s history. When you tap and pay, you’re helping to provide the fast, frequent and reliable service people across the city rely on. Fares help us bridge the funding gap, maintain current service and create a stronger future for Muni.

Looking ahead, MuniMobile will eventually be retired

Other features of MuniMobile will be phased out as Clipper continues to bring new benefits online. We’ll keep you updated about the changes. Stay tuned for:

  • Alerts in the app
  • Emails to current app users
  • Updates on the MuniMobile web page (SFMTA.com/MuniMobile)

Our goal is to make your rider experience as convenient as possible. The new Clipper system is making riding better than ever. It’s allowing us to move away from supporting a standalone app -- which will save us money -- and still provide riders with an easy way to pay their “Fare Share” (https://www.sfmta.com/fareshare).
