May Fix It! Week improved reliability in the Market Street Subway

In May, we completed a successful Fix It! Week in the Market Street Subway. The subway closed early and crews worked throughout the night. We completed important maintenance and repair work during these extended periods that cannot be done while trains are running.

Our Buildings and Grounds, Track, Overhead Lines, Signals, Motive Power and Engineering teams logged more than 2,600 hours. Their work will help keep Muni safe, reliable and ready for the future.

Key Accomplishments

During the May Fix It! Week, crews completed important projects throughout the subway:

  • Replaced aging overhead contact wire. This improves reliability and reduces the risk of service disruptions.
  • Performed preventive maintenance on tracks and track equipment. This supports safer and smoother train operations.
  • Removed 5,000 feet of obsolete signal wire. This prepared the subway for future modernization and capacity improvements.
  • Inspected and upgraded electrical systems and substations. This improves system reliability and reduces equipment failure.
  • Completed life-safety inspections, facility repairs and station maintenance. This helps keep stations safe and welcoming for riders and employees.
  • Cleaned stations, tunnels and drainage systems. This creates a cleaner environment and helps protect the subway from water damage.
  • Repaired heating, ventilation and cooling systems. This improves station conditions and protects critical equipment.

We safely completed all the planned work. And subway service returned on time each day.

The repairs behind your ride

On most nights, our maintenance crews have only a few hours to get work done. Some critical tasks can’t be finished during those short windows. For these, we dedicate an entire week, or weekend, to maintain our infrastructure.

This extra time allows our teams to perform inspections and make upgrades. We also use the time to replace critical systems that keep the network in a state of good repair. This ensures safe, reliable transit for the community.

Muni is vital to San Francisco. It supports economic vitality, environmental sustainability and cultural vibrancy. Keeping Muni in a state of good repair helps the city thrive.

Thank you to our riders for your patience and support as we continue investing in the Muni system. Fix It! Weeks and Weekends help keep San Francisco moving.
