Existing boarding island at Geneva and San Jose avenues

A longer, safer boarding island is coming to the first inbound M Ocean View stop at San Jose and Geneva avenues. This is part of our J Church and M Ocean View Transit and Safety Improvements.

As early as Monday, June 15, San Francisco Public Works crews will begin construction. The new boarding island will be longer and wider. It will replace the existing island at the intersection of San Jose and Geneva avenues. Crews will demolish the existing island. With the new island, Muni riders will no longer step from or onto the street using these stops. No parking will be removed as part of this construction.

We expect construction on the island to last up to two weeks. We expect construction to take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day.

Expected timeline (subject to change):

Monday, June 15 through Friday, June 26

  • Southbound (inbound) train boarding island demolition and construction near southwest corner of San Jose and Geneva avenues next to Balboa Park.
  • Train service will resume shortly after the island is completed.

This new boarding island will make riding the M Ocean View safer and more accessible. In a later phase of construction, we will add a new wheelchair-accessible ramp to the new island.

Muni service impacts:

  • The M Ocean View will continue to operate during construction.
  • The train stop will be closed when demolition and construction starts. We expect service to resume shortly after the island is complete.
  • Riders can use a nearby temporary inbound stop at San Jose Ave & Niagara Ave. (southbound) during construction

Traffic impacts:

  • While the southbound island is under construction, San Jose Avenue traffic will be limited in that direction. We expect there will be at least one lane open to traffic at all times. Drivers should use caution and be mindful of workers directing traffic. Watch for signs during construction.

Parking impacts:

  • No parking spaces will be removed during and after construction.

Noise impacts:

  • There may be some noise during brief excavation work.

We expect to implement more improvements later this year. These are also part of the J Church and M Ocean View Transit and Safety Improvements.
