Project Update: More frequent 1 California service starts August 29

To address crowding on the 1 California, riders will see buses arrive every nine minutes instead of every ten minutes starting Saturday, August 29, 2026. Between Presidio Avenue and downtown, buses are expected to arrive every four to five minutes.

This improvement is an early benefit for riders as the California Street Transit and Safety Project continues to move forward. Since March we’ve been listening to the community to gather their feedback on how we can improve the corridor. We heard from riders—and data confirmed—that crowding was an urgent issue. We made this service improvement by adjusting service elsewhere to provide more frequent service, shorter waits and additional capacity during busy times on the 1 California.

This service increase is cost neutral, allowing us to improve service without increasing Muni's overall operating budget.
