Project Update September 2026: The project's planning and design phases are now complete. The project attended a public hearing in August 2026 and received approval for the design elements that required it. The project team is now preparing for construction activities. Due to planned paving work on Monterey Boulevard by the Public Works department, traffic stripping and traffic calming elements associated with this project are not expected to be installed until mid to late 2028. The traffic signal upgrade and rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) are expected to be installed in mid to late 2027.

Project Background

The project originated from community and resident feedback gathered during a community walk hosted by the D7 Supervisors office and SFMTA staff in the fall of 2024. Through the Neighborhood Transportation Program, the D7 Supervisors office dedicated their funds to improving pedestrian safety on Monterey Boulevard. The SFMTA started the planning and design phases for the project in the fall of 2025. A community outreach effort was initiated at the end of 2025 through early 2026. Since then, the SFMTA completed the design phase and received approvals to implement the project. The project's traffic safety improvements include:

  1. Narrowing the width of existing vehicle travel lanes
  2. Painted safety zones
  3. Daylighting red zones
  4. Yield markings
  5. Crosswalk upgrades to continental crosswalks
  6. Rubber speed hump and thumbnail island
  7. Upgrade to continental crosswalks or repaint them at several intersections
  8. Traffic signal head upgrade at the intersection of Monterey Boulevard and Foerster
  9. Installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) at the intersection of Monterey Boulevard and Acadia Street

Check out the latest design information document for more details on the design elements.

The rectangular rapid flashing beacons were approved for installation at a public hearing held in August 2026. The remaining traffic safety improvement items did not require a public hearing and have been approved for installation through the SFMTA's internal review process.

Construction Activities

The project team is now preparing for construction activities for the project. Due to planned roadway paving work by the Department of Public Works, several of the design elements (items 1 through 7) will not be implemented until mid to late 2028, after the conclusion of paving work. The remaining design elements (items 8 and 9) are undergoing coordination with Public Works and the SFMTA signals shop, and are not expected to be installed until mid to late 2027.
