The fare increases result from the implementation of the SFMTA Board approved Automatic Consumer Price Index (CPI) Policy. The Automatic CPI is a set formula based on a combination of the Bay Area Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) and the SFMTA’s labor cost.

The Automatic CPI was established to create a more predictable and transparent way to set charges that are not already governed under the two-year Operating Budget process required in the SFMTA Charter. As such, the following fees, fines, rates and charges will experience increases effective July 1.

  • Parking/Transit/Taxi Fines and Late Penalties
  • Neighborhood Parking Permits
  • Contractor Parking Permits
  • Color Curb Zones
  • Temporary Street Closure
  • Special Traffic Permits
  • Project 20 Processing
  • Boot Removal
  • Auto Towing & Storage
  • Special Collections
  • Service Vehicle Rental
  • Parklet Installation
  • Parking Meter Use
  • Sign Posting
  • Various Taxi Permits

Community input was essential in determining the final budget priorities and funding options. To gather the public sentiment, several public hearings were held at the SFMTA Board, Citizen Advisory Council meetings, two public town hall meetings and ongoing outreach via the SFMTA Twitter account and website.

The fare increases correspond with the start of the 2016 Fiscal Year which takes effect July 1, 2015.
