Dr. King’s Legacy Celebrated
“On Tap” gives you a heads up about the big events in town and what Muni routes and lines will get you to the party. Look for this feature to be posted usually on Wednesdays for a look ahead to the weekend.
The coming three-day weekend has lots going on all over town. Some may plan to ride a freedom train, commune with neighbors and civic leaders at the Labor and Community Breakfast or take in Dr. Cornel West’s “fiery oration” at the Castro Theater to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Others may take advantage of the long weekend to go to a dance party on Sunday or cinch up their corsets for the Edwardian Ball. Of course, those aren’t mutually exclusive.
If you have little ones, you may just need to go catch a Sea Lion Encounter at Pier 39 to celebrate 25 years of pinnipeds at the pier.
2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Events
Monday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Yerba Buena Gardens & Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Mission Street, between 3rd and 4th streets
Against the dramatic backdrop of the memorial to Dr. King, which includes 20-foot high by 50-foot wide waterfall, in SoMa’s Yerba Buena Gardens, the day-long celebration of Dr. King and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the civil rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., will include free, family friendly events, festivals and programs.
A highlight of the day’s events is the launch of the NorcalMLK Foundation’s Black Comix Arts Festival. Monday’s BCAF activities will be held in the Metreon, adjacent to the Yerba Buena Gardens, with screenings beginning at 10 a.m. and the Expo at noon. A featured guest at the Expo will be Andrew Aydin, who is co-writing with U.S. Rep. John Lewis and New York Times best-selling artist Nate Powell the graphic novel trilogy, March. Aydin is the Digital Director & Policy Advisor to Lewis. The work is a memoir of the congressman’s life. Signed copies of March: Book Two, to be released later this month, will be available at the Expo.
For those who plan to join the festivities, Muni service on the 14 Mission, 30 Stockton, 41 Union-Stockton and Muni Metro to Powell Station will get you to the area.
Muni service note: No Muni service will be affected by this event.
2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March/Parade
Monday, 11 a.m.
Start: Caltrain Station, 4th and King streets
A special portion of the day’s celebration offers a vibrant commemoration of the historic civil rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. The MLK2015 Commemorative March/Parade starts at the SoMa Caltrain Station and ends at Yerba Buena Gardens.
Special Muni bus shuttle service will be available between the Caltrain Station at 4th and King streets and Yerba Buena Gardens from 9 a.m. to noon for those who are participating in the Caltrain Freedom Train ride, but are unable to participate in the march.
Muni service note: Muni may be subject to delays in the vicinity of the march from around 11 am to noon.
We are honored to collaborate with the event organizers, the NorcalMLK Foundation, to provide commemorative Muni Freedom Train Passes for the March to Freedom celebration. The passes will be valid on all Muni buses and trains, except cable cars, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Holiday Muni Service and Parking Enforcement
Muni will operate on a Saturday schedule for the holiday and parking enforcement will include meters and 7-day street sweeping.
