SFMTA Statement Regarding Four Serious Traffic Collisions Yesterday

Saturday, March 2, 2019

Today, Ed Reiskin, Director of Transportation for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) issued the following statement following four traffic collisions yesterday that resulted in two people dead and at least two more people seriously injured.

“Since 2014, when San Francisco adopted Vision Zero, our goal to end traffic fatalities in San Francisco, we have made significant progress in reshaping our streets and reshaping how the public thinks about traffic safety.

“However, fatal crashes continue to occur, and yesterday, Friday, March 1, was a tragic day on our streets. Four serious crashes happened, leaving two people dead and at least two more seriously injured. These crashes happened in four different neighborhoods – the Tenderloin, Pacific Heights, the Excelsior and Forest Hill. Ongoing police investigations mean that the details of these crashes will continue to emerge in the days ahead.

“Our Vision Zero goal means that we never treat these crashes as mere accidents. Rather, they are a wakeup call to recommit ourselves to ending traffic fatalities on our streets. One way the city is doing that is through our Vision Zero Two-Year Action Strategy, which we just released on Thursday, February 28. The strategy includes commitments from 14 different city agencies. It charts a path to zero deaths by transforming our streets, reducing dangerous driving and connecting the response to traffic deaths to the city’s goals around equity, climate change and housing affordability."
