3rd Street Quick-Build Implementation Updates

Implementation Update: Monday March 25, 2024

 

The 3rd Street Quick-Build Project is substantially completed and the two-way bike lane is open and ready to ride as of Monday, March 25, 2024. Over the weekend crews from San Francisco Department of Public Works poured the concrete medians and islands that were added at the intersections of King Street and 3rd Street, and Townsend Street and 3rd Street.

 

Remaining work:
 

  • Paint new curbs and medians
  • Accessible curb ramp
  • Additional permanent striping work

 

Implementation Update: Tuesday March 19, 2024

 

After SFMTA Board approval Tuesday March 5, SFMTA in-house shops teams began working immediately to deliver the safety improvements to the 3rd Street corridor from the Lefty O'Doul 3rd Street Bridge to Townsend Street. 

 

Work Completed as of 3/19/2024:

  • SFMTA Paint Shop have substantially installed new striping, including the two-way bikeway.
  • SFMTA Curb Paint Shop have installed the new color curb zones.
  • SFMTA Signal Shop are scheduled this week to update traffic signals, which includes installing bike signals, at King Street and Berry Street.
  • SFMTA Sign Shop has surveyed locations for new signs and plastic posts this week, and assisted with relocating signs that were in the way of new signals. Installation of signs will follow the completion of the striping work.

 

Upcoming Work:

  • Continued work applying permanent striping
  • Adding wayfinding and additional signage for protected bikeway and bike signals
  • Installation of plastic flex posts, new median islands at Townsend Street, and a new accessible curb ramp at Oracle Park
  • Construction of a concrete median at the eastern crosswalk of 3rd and King streets
  • SFMTA Meter Shop will be working on 3rd between King and Townsend, and on Townsend to update hours and zone type assignments, as well as shift signs where appropriate.
  • Moving the bikeshare station adjacent to the new bike lane, and new parking zones will be added in the old station footprint.
  • Moving of the taxi stand from the east side of the street to the west side of the street north of King Street
