New Boarding Islands and Flashing Beacons Make San Jose Avenue Safer

In recent months, we’ve made changes to San Jose Avenue to make crossing the street or getting on Muni safer and more comfortable.

Longer, wider boarding islands at San Jose and Lakeview Avenues

An M Ocean View train stops at a new boarding island at San Jose Avenue and Lakeview Avenue

As part of the M Ocean View Transit and Safety Project, we added new boarding islands at the train stops at San Jose and Lakeview avenues. These stops are long enough for each door of the train to open to the platform. This means all riders can get on and off the train onto a transit platform. Additionally, the platforms narrow the intersection. We expect this will help calm traffic speeds at this intersection.

Getting on and off Muni safely was a common concern riders shared with us during project outreach. From 2017-2022, an average of two people per year were hit by cars while getting on or off the M Ocean View in the project area.

Flashing beacons make crossing the street safer near Balboa Park

A few blocks north, we added flashing beacons on San Jose Avenue at the Paulding Street and San Juan Avenue intersections. These beacons help make people walking safer at intersections by making them more visible.

During the initial outreach for  the J Church Safety and Accessibility Project, we heard  we needed to improve the J Church’s reliability and speed. But we also had been hearing from community members about their traffic safety concerns for San Jose Avenue. Families wanted calmer traffic speeds and safer crossings. They wanted safer crossings to get to Balboa Park Playground, Balboa Pool and to the J Church stops.

Like the boarding islands at Lakeview Avenue, these flashing beacons build onto the safety benefits of the transit lanes added to segments of San Jose Avenue in recent years.

Next Steps

We expect to implement more safety and transit reliability improvements later in 2026 as part of the J Church and M Ocean View Transit and Safety Improvements Project.
