Sidewalk Remains Open During Trenching on Church Street

Service Affected
Walking

As part of the Church Divide Feeder Circuit Upgrade Project, the installation of the electrical switch and conduits is set to begin on Monday, January 7, 2019. The construction will take three to four weeks to finish. This work will require us to dig a four-foot-wide trench on the western sidewalk of Church Street from Market to Reservoir Street. During construction, the sidewalk will remain open with a path of travel provided for pedestrians. Access to local businesses and residence will be available at all times.

Maximizing the work window, we have rescheduled the project from last October to combine two conduit installations in order to minimize the disruption to the neighbors. During construction, the SFMTA ambassadors will be on hand to assist pedestrians and shoppers. The new feeder circuit system will ensure transit service reliability.

Here is what to expect during construction:

  • Work hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

  • Trench will be covered with plywood after work.

  • Trench will be safely barricaded during work hours.

  • Trench digging will take place section by section and it will take two or three days to finish the section in front of a property.

  • Towards the end of January, the work will be crossing 14th Street. For about a week, one lane will remain open for traffic on 14th Street and bus stops near the intersection will be temporarily relocated.

  • Noise can be heard during excavation.
