Summer 2022 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project Update

Happy Summer! 

Construction is underway on the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project. This project, developed in close partnership with the community and local organizations, aims to make 6th Street safer and more livable for all. 

Construction is expected to continue through mid-2024. By the end of the project, 6th Street will be transformed to include: 

  • Wider sidewalks on both sides of the street 
  • Curb bulb-outs at all intersections to create safer intersections 
  • New traffic signals at Stevenson and Natoma Streets 
  • Crosswalks at all alleys that cross 6th Street 
  • Streetscape improvements like decorative sidewalks, community art, and pedestrian lighting 

Our partners at Public Works are leading the construction phase of the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project and directly oversee the contractor implementing these improvements. 

Recently, work on the corridor had to pause due to a utility conflict; as of July 12, the crews have been able to resume work. So far, work done on the corridor includes: 

  • Sewer work at the north and east corners of the Stevenson, Mission, Minna, Natoma, and Howard intersections 
  • 50% of all basement abatement work  
  • 25% of all road base, sidewalk, curb and gutter, electrical, and traffic signal work 

For the remainder of the summer, progress will continue on the road base, sidewalk, gutter, and curb work.  Additionally, electrical and traffic signal work between Stevenson and Mission will be completed, along with the remaining basement abatement work, and as-needed utility relocations. 

 As the beginning phase of construction progresses, we recognize that extended projects like this can create disruption for the community and for businesses along and near the corridor. The project team is available at all times to discuss questions, concerns, and needs.  

For businesses, the project team is committed to ensuring access to entrances remains preserved and in compliance with ADA during the duration of construction. Please reach out if you have concerns or questions about access. Additionally, our partners at OEWD and Mid-Market CBD have a suite of resources available—from small business consulting to Open for Business signage—to support during this time. 

For members of the 6th Street community, our partners at Code Tenderloin are regularly out on 6th Street to assist with questions about construction, ensure safety, and connect people with additional resources. If you see the crews out there, say hello and they will be happy to assist you!
