Project Overview

Columbus Avenue facing the Transamerica Pyramid

In efforts to create a culture that prioritizes traffic safety and reach San Francisco’s goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2024, a collaborative citywide strategy called Vision Zero was formed.

One such effort includes the SFMTA proposing pedestrian safety improvements at various Columbus Avenue intersections in coordination with an existing paving project led by San Francisco Public Works.

Project Details

The SFMTA is proposing safety measures for people walking on Columbus Avenue from Green to Broadway streets. These intersections were identified as areas in need of safety improvements through a data-driven process, called WalkFirst, which analyzed where pedestrian injuries and fatalities were occurring in San Francisco, identified the cause, and identified the best strategies to make city streets safer and more walkable. Proposed pedestrian safety improvements are being funded through a combination of SFMTA revenue bonds (approximately $509,000) and Proposition B funds (approximately $800,000.) Learn more about Proposition B (2011 Road Repaving and Street Safety Bond) here.

These safety improvements are being coordinated with an existing repaving project 2267J from Washington to Filbert led by San Francisco Public Works.

PROPOSED MEASURES

The proposed safety improvements on Columbus Avenue are as follows:

  • Columbus and Grant Avenues
    • Permanent pedestrian bulbout to decrease pedestrian crossing distance and provide additional pedestrian space at a key location
    • Continental crosswalk to increase pedestrian visibility while crossing Grant Avenue
  • Columbus Avenue, Green and Stockton Streets
    • Permanent pedestrian bulbouts to decrease pedestrian crossing distance and provide additional pedestrian space at key locations
    • Continental crosswalks to increase pedestrian visibility while crossing
  • Columbus Avenue and Vallejo Street

    • Permanent pedestrian bulbouts to decrease pedestrian crossing distance and provide additional pedestrian space at key locations

    • Continental crosswalks to increase pedestrian visibility while crossing
  • Columbus Avenue, Pacific and Kearny Streets

    • Permanent pedestrian bulbouts to decrease pedestrian crossing distance and provide additional pedestrian space at key locations
    • Continental crosswalks to increase pedestrian visibility while crossing

Columbus Avenue, from Washington Street to Broadway

    • In efforts to reach San Francisco's goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2024, a goal called Vision Zero, the SFMTA is proposing the addition of bicycle lanes in both directions of Columbus Avenue between Broadway and Washington Street,  improve safety and comfort for people riding bicycles on this designated bicycle route.

Proposed SFMTA Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP) Improvements for the 30-Stockton 

  • SFMTA’s Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP) identifies a variety of Travel Time Reduction Proposals (TTRPs), which are engineering strategies oriented to specifically address the delays vehicles face along rapid routes. As a part of the TEP's proposed Rapid Network, the 30-Stockton has its own toolkit of TTRPs, which specifically target the evaluated causes of delays within the 30-Stockton corridor. ADDITIONAL POTENTIAL COLUMBUS AVENUE PROPOSALS

Potential Additional Pedestrian Safety Enhancements

The following potential safety enhancements may be studied at other locations along the Columbus Avenue corridor, following implementation of the Proposed Measures listed above: 

  • Red visibility curbs to increase visibility of pedestrians by restricting parking adjacent to corners 
  • Leading pedestrian intervals to give people walking at a signalized intersection three to five seconds before any conflicting autos receive the green
  • Advance Stop lines extend across all approaching vehicle lanes to indicate where vehicles must stop in compliance with a stop sign or signal

Potential Temporary Sidewalk Widening

  • The San Francisco Planning Department is studying the potential for temporary sidewalk widening on Columbus Avenue. Initial concepts include creation of a "promenade" space for pedestrians to use where the existing parking lane is located between Union and Green Streets.

SFCTA Columbus Avenue Neighborhood Plan

  • The San Francisco County Transportation Authority's Columbus Avenue Neighborhood Plan Study’s objective was to identify changes to transportation infrastructure and policies that could enhance the livability and economic viability of the Columbus Avenue corridor, benefit residents, merchants and visitors, and enjoy broad community support. The study area included Columbus Avenue between the Transamerica Pyramid and Ghirardelli Square and was completed in 2010. Click here to find out more about this study.
