The existing traffic lanes on Sutter Street are too narrow for Muni’s 2 Sutter and other large vehicles. The Sutter Street Safety Project is committed to improve transportation safety on Sutter Street from Gough to Fillmore streets. It would also improve transit reliability.

To improve safety and Muni operations, the traffic lanes on Sutter Street will be increased to a standard lane width. This will be accomplished by reducing the two westbound traffic lanes to one lane. A traffic lane striping change is planned on Sutter Street between Gough and Fillmore streets starting in early November 2025. To inform designs that address safety issues, we have considered travel patterns, community and Muni operator input and technical feasibility.

Existing Conditions (Sutter Street looking east)

Currently, one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes, all with narrower lane widths than the standards required for Muni buses. One westbound lane has bicycle sharrows.

New Improved Conditions (Sutter Street looking east)

The project will replace three narrow lanes with two standard-width lanes. The westbound bicycle sharrows would remain. The second westbound lane approaching Webster Street would remain as a left-turn lane. There is no parking removal planned. These changes are expected to result in minimal changes in traffic flow.
