Essential Worker Ride Home program 5.20.2020

Wednesday, May 20, 2020

Dear Taxi Industry members:

We wanted to make you aware of a new program launched by the San Francisco Department of the Environment called Essential Worker Ride Home.

Taxis will be used to transport essential workers in need of a ride home from work between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. while transit options are unavailable due to emergency-related transit service reductions.

The program will cover the cost of taxi rides home for essential employees in San Francisco, up to ten (10) rides per month, per person, and maximum $70 per ride.

Passengers will be reimbursed for their trips, so Taxi Drivers do not need to take any additional action outside of a usual fare. All you need to do is complete the trip and accept payment as usual – the program will pay the passenger back for the ride.

Eligible trips:

  • Originate at the employee’s work location in San Francisco and end at their home, a transit stop that will take them home, or the location of their parked car (e.g. park-and-ride lot, transit parking lot, etc.). This includes essential employees at SFO, as the airport is managed by The City and County of San Francisco.
  • Be taken between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. while transit options are unavailable due to emergency-related transit service reductions.
  • Be made in a San Francisco taxi and a receipt must be submitted with a reimbursement request. Only meter fare is eligible for reimbursement, and tips will not be reimbursed.
  • Rides with Transportation Network Companies, such as Uber and Lyft, are not eligible for reimbursement.
