Neighborhoods Affected

Longer, safer boarding islands are coming to the J Church. This is part of our J Church and M Ocean View Transit and Safety Improvements.

As soon as Thursday, April 2, 2026, San Francisco Public Works crews will begin construction. The new boarding islands will be longer and wider. They will replace the existing islands at the intersection of San Jose and Santa Ynez avenues. Crews will demolish the existing small islands there. With the new islands, Muni riders will no longer step from or onto the street using these stops. Additionally, we expect them to help calm traffic speed,  making crossing San Jose Avenue safer for people walking.

We expect construction on each island to last up to two weeks. After both islands are constructed, we expect roadway paving next to the new islands to take one week. We expect construction to take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day.

Expected timeline (subject to change):

Thursday, April 2 through Thursday, April 16

  • Southbound (outbound) train boarding island demolition and construction near northwest corner of San Jose and Santa Ynez avenues next to Balboa Park.

Thursday, April 16 through Thursday, April 30

  • Northbound (inbound) train boarding island demolition and construction near southwest corner of San Jose and Santa Ynez avenues.

Monday, May 4 through Friday, May 8

  • Repaving next to both new boarding islands.

These new boarding islands will make riding the J Church safer and more accessible. In a later phase of construction, we expect to add wheelchair-accessible ramps to the two new islands.

Muni service impacts:

  • The J Church will continue to operate during construction.
  • Each train stop will be closed when demolition and construction starts. We expect service to resume at both stops in early May 2026.
  • Riders can use nearby stops at San Jose Ave & Santa Rosa Ave (northbound/southbound) or San Jose Ave & Ocean Ave (northbound/southbound)

Traffic impacts:

  • While each island is under construction, San Jose Avenue traffic will be limited in that direction. We expect there will be at least one lane open to traffic at all times. Drivers should use caution and be mindful of workers directing traffic.
  • While the northbound island is under construction, the driveways to homes directly in front of the island will be blocked.
    • This includes homes from 1965 to 1975 San Jose Avenue.
    • Construction is expected to last approximately two weeks for this island.
    • When construction is completed, these driveways will become accessible again. Residents will continue to be allowed to turn left or right into or out of these driveways. To do so, they may drive over the boarding island.

Parking impacts:

  • No parking spaces will be permanently removed.
  • Temporary impacts to parking during construction are possible. Watch for signs during construction.

Noise impacts:

  • There may be some noise during brief excavation work.

We expect to implement more improvements later this year. These are also part of the J Church and M Ocean View Transit and Safety Improvements.
