Masks Recommended

Until Further Notice

SFMTA.com/Mask

Following the latest guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), masks are recommended but no longer required in any SFMTA facilities or vehicles, as of April 21, 2022. This also includes paratransit and taxis. We recommend that masks continue to be worn on transit, paratransit and taxi vehicles, to help protect those who remain at higher risk to COVID-19, including older adults, and some people with disabilities.

The federal order requiring masks on public transportation conveyances and at transportation hubs, including in Muni stations and while riding transit, is no longer in effect as of April 18, 2022.

You can feel confident that riding on Muni is just as safe if not safer than other indoor settings in San Francisco.

  • Muni has excellent airflow: The Muni fleet HVAC systems turn the air over once every minute.
  • Bay Area has a high vaccination rate: Because the COVID vaccination rate in the Bay Area is one of the highest in the US, there’s a high probability that the person sitting next to you on Muni is vaccinated, which means they’re more protected against COVID-19 and less likely to spread an infection.
  • One-way masking works — especially when the mask is a surgical mask, N95, KN95, KF94, FFP2, double mask or a cloth mask with a filter inside.
