SFMTA is implementing a series of targeted service changes to improve reliability, reduce crowding, and better align service with actual rider demand. These adjustments are cost-neutral, meaning we’re reallocating existing resources to deliver better service without additional funding. We are changing Muni service on a few routes later this month to make it even easier to get to school and work in the morning.

These changes are based on direct feedback from riders and operators. They aim to improve your Muni experience by:

  • Addressing weekday crowding on routes used by students
  • Expanding express service for downtown commuters
  • Improving reliability and connections to key destinations including regional transit

This round of changes is focused on weekday morning peak periods, where data shows the most crowding and the greatest potential to improve rider experience. These updates are based on passenger load analysis.

Service Change Summary

Riders let us know that they rely on early morning trips on the 1X California Express to head downtown for work. To meet their needs, we found a cost-neutral way to bring back two trips that were cut earlier this year.

Starting Sept. 2, the 7:15 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. trips will return to the 1X California Express.

Now, morning buses will leave 33rd Ave & Geary Blvd for downtown at:

  • 7:15 a.m. (restored)
  • 7:30 a.m.
  • 7:45 a.m. (restored)
  • 8:00 a.m.
  • 8:20 a.m.

These extra trips will help riders get downtown more easily during busy mornings – when Muni matters most as an affordable way to cross the city. This will also help riders making connections to regional transit like BART.

The change will help riders have more flexibility and see fewer delays. Adding these trips will also cut down on crowding on the 1 California and 1X California Express, for more comfortable rides on both routes.

30X Marina Express

The 30X Marina Express will also add a new morning trip. We are making this change after closely studying data and hearing from riders about the need for a later morning trip heading directly to downtown.

Starting Sept. 2, the 30X Marina Express will leave Beach St & Divisadero St at:

  • 7:15 a.m.
  • 7:45 a.m.
  • 8:15 a.m. (new trip added)

This new trip will help reduce wait times and crowding. It also will offer riders a reliable and direct path to downtown during the morning commute. It will also help riders making connections to regional transit like BART.

As another step to improve service, we’ll make small stop changes in the Marina:

  • The terminal stop at Beach St & Divisadero St will be moved onto Divisadero at Beach.
  • The stop at Scott St & North Point St will be removed. Riders can use the nearby stop at North Point St & Divisadero St, just one block away.
    • The North Point St & Divisadero St stop will be shifted to the other side of the street onto Divisadero, at the southwest corner of the intersection.
  • A new stop will be added on Divisadero St & Jefferson St.

We will post signs and maps where stops are moving to help you navigate this change.

8 Bayshore, 29 Sunset, 49 Van Ness/Mission

Students heavily rely on the 8 Bayshore, 29 Sunset and 49 Van Ness/Mission routes, and with a new school year starting, we're adjusting bus frequencies during peak hours to help reduce crowding on the buses while reducing wait times.

Starting Sept. 2:

  • We’re increasing frequency of inbound trips on the 49 Van Ness/Mission during the busiest hours: 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.
  • We’ll also adjust schedules to improve reliability on a number of routes during the afternoons. The 8 Bayshore and 29 Sunset are two of these routes. Students heavily rely on these during the evening peak.

These changes aim to reduce pass-ups when ridership is highest. They also make it easier to catch a ride during morning and evening peaks, and they’ll support student trips just as the new school year gets underway later this month.

Stop changes to help riders access key destinations

We’re also making several stop changes based on rider feedback and construction projects:
