Muni’s fleet of electric trolley buses use clean energy to move people around San Francisco.
Earth Day is April 22. It’s a time to reflect on how we can live more sustainably and leave a cleaner world for the next generation. The SFMTA’s Muni fleet is the greenest fleet of any major North American transit agency.
But our quest to clean up does not stop there. We are governed by California’s ambitious environmental policies. And the city of San Francisco is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
You can help the city meet this goal by choosing to walk, roll or take public transit instead of driving. And we can help you! The SFMTA is always working to increase the accessibility, convenience and safety of eco-friendly transit options.
Electrifying our fleet
By choosing to ride Muni, you are making an environmentally friendly transit choice.
- Our trolley buses, Muni Metro trains, cable cars and streetcars are zero-emission. They run on 100% renewable hydropower from the Hetch Hetchy Power System.
- Our hybrid bus fleet is made up of buses that run on a combination of batteries and renewable diesel. We aim to phase out all diesel- and gas-powered Muni vehicles testing battery-electric buses in a pilot program.
The 3rd Street Quick-Build Project added protected bike lanes and traffic signals specifically for people biking and rolling, as well as other safety improvements near the ballpark.
Making our streets safer for walking and rolling
We want walking and rolling around San Francisco to be a viable option for as many people as possible.
- We invest in making our streets safer for everyone who uses them. This includes people walking and biking. In the final quarter of 2025, the SFMTA installed 88 new speed humps, 33 high-visibility continental crosswalks and 11 pedestrian safety zones.
- We are also expanding comfortable and accessible biking and rolling routes throughout the city. We’re adding protected bikeways – separated from cars by temporary or permanent structural elements – traffic signals specifically for biking and rolling and high-visibility “green carpet” bikeways.
- Our Speed Safety Camera network encourages drivers to slow down. Money generated from violations can only be used to further improve street safety. For example, we’ll use it to install more rapid-flashing beacons at crosswalks.
Connecting the city through public transit
Muni isn’t just environmentally friendly. The system is fast, efficient, reliable and safe. And it’s only gotten better, thanks to our Muni Forward initiative and our focus on the customer experience.
- Through the initiative, we’ve made more than 48 miles of safety improvements along streets in San Francisco’s High Injury Network.
- Injury collisions have fallen by 50% or more on multiple Muni Forward corridors.
- Travel times are up to 35% faster where we’ve made improvements.
- And we have record-high rider satisfaction!

Convenient, climate friendly options for people who drive
Sometimes driving is necessary or simply more convenient. We understand this and are working to make it easier to use private vehicles in environmentally responsible ways.
- The SFMTA has a number of programs to help people find parking in busy areas and spend less time circling the block looking for a spot. These programs include garage reservation platforms that let people reserve a parking space before getting in the car. We also work with small businesses to understand the unique parking needs of San Francisco’s commercial corridors.
- In the coming years, the agency will be expanding San Francisco’s curbside electric charging network in partnership with City Hall and the private sector. We hope this will make it easier to own an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in San Francisco.
Continuing to keep the climate in mind
These are some of the ways we empower everyone to make climate-conscious choices.
And as April continues, we’ll share more about what we are doing to keep San Francisco green. You can find more information about our programs at the Climate Action at the SFMTA webpage (SFMTA.com/Climate).
