We’re here for all your Halloween fun, and we love it when our buses and trains serve as inspiration!

Halloween weekend is upon us, and San Francisco is brimming with free, family-friendly celebrations. That means night markets, festivals and trick-or-treat possibilities in every corner of the city.

This is the perfect time to explore your neighborhood – or a new one – with costumes, community and a little candy.

Free events and Muni tips for easy trips  

ScareGrove

  • When: Friday, Oct. 24 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Sigmund Stern Grove 

Kick off Halloween weekend at the annual ScareGrove Festival in Stern Grove! This free, family-friendly event features a costume contest and carnival rides. Ghirardelli Spooky Square

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 25 from 1p.m. to 4p.m.
  • Where: Ghirardelli Square

This annual waterfront celebration at Ghirardelli Square brings a live magic show, kids’ costume contest and the always popular dog costume contest. Learn more at Ghirardelli Square’s event webpage.

Halloween Stroll in Daylight on Sanchez Slow Street 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Where: Sanchez Slow Street between Day Street and 24th streets

Stop by Sanchez Slow Street to trick-or-treat in daylight, enjoy a costume contest and check out decorated homes. Learn more at Slow Sanchez’s blog page.

MinneSLOWta St. Spooky Stroll by Dogpatch Music Series 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 25 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Where: MinneSLOWta Slow Street, from 19th to 22nd

Don’t miss the Annual Spooky Street Stroll by the Dogpatch Music Series! Candy, costumes, live music, adult beverages and community spirit will be part of the fun at this beloved neighborhood stroll. Learn more at MinneSLOWta St. Spooky Stroll’s event webpage

North Beach Halloween Night Market  

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 25 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Where: Grant Avenue and Vallejo Street

North Beach will offer a Halloween-themed extravaganza featuring local restaurants, art vendors, entertainment, games and much more. Learn the details at the North Beach Night Market event webpage

Thrill-O-Ween Fest at Thrive City 

  • When: Sunday, Oct. 26 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Where: Thrive City, 1 Warriors Way

Celebrate Halloween with an afternoon of family fun. Enjoy costume contests, DJ sets, a magic show, pumpkin decorating, trick-or-treat stations, inflatables, crafts and more. Great Hauntway at Sunset Dunes  

  • When: Sunday, Oct. 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Sunset Dunes Park, Judah to Taraval 

The Great Hauntway is San Francisco’s largest Halloween event, and it’s completely free to attend. Hop on the special L Taraval train decorated for the occasion. It will be departing Embarcadero at approximately 12:55 p.m. with arrival to the beach at 1:29 p.m. and enjoy the festivities! Alamo Scare: Painted Ladies Block Party  

  • When: Sunday, Oct. 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Sunset Dunes Park, Judah to Taraval 

A charming family-friendly block party with candy, costumes and the chance to snap a photo by the iconic Painted Ladies. Learn more at Alamo Square Neighborhood Association’s event webpage.  

How to get there on Muni: 5 Fulton, 6 Hayes/Parnassus and 22 Fillmore  

Trick-or-Treat at the Ferry Building 

  • When: Thursday, Oct. 30 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Ferry Building

Wander through the Marketplace and stop by shops marked with festive signage. That’s your cue that these businesses are ready to welcome trick-or-treaters in their best costumes. Enjoy spooky music, playful games and plenty of Halloween spirit for the whole family! Learn more at Ferry Building Marketplace’s event webpage.   

How to get there on Muni: 2 Sutter, 7 Haight/Noriega, 9R San Bruno Rapid, 12-Folsom/Pacific, 14/14R Mission, California Street Cable Car and F Market and Wharves Streetcar routes. Muni Metro: Take the J, K, L, M or N to Embarcadero Station.  

NOPNA Halloween Block Party Extravaganza  

  • When: Friday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Where: Grove Street, between Central and Baker

Trick or Treat on Slow Hearst  

  • When: Friday, Oct. 31 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Sunnyside, Hearst Avenue between Foerster and Acadia

A neighborhood celebration featuring costumes, a trick-or-treat map and a community potluck. Learn more at Slow Hearst’s Halloween webpage.

Halloween Castro Night Market  

  • When: Friday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Where: Castro and 18th streets 

The last Castro Night Market of 2025 is on Halloween this year! It features local food vendors and merchants as usual. But this time, you can also catch special Halloween live entertainment. That includes a Creature Feature Drag show, DJ sets, Glow in the Streets Costume Contest and more! Learn the details at Castro Night Market’s webpage.  

How to get there on Muni: 24 Divisadero, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 35 Eureka, 37-Corbett routes and F Market and Wharves Streetcar routes. Muni Metro: Take the K Ingleside, L Taraval or M Ocean View to Castro station.  

Halloween Night Bazaar in the Sunset 

  • When: Friday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Where: Irving Street between 22nd and 25th avenues 

A festive, family-friendly Halloween night event. The bazaar features local food, entertainment, merchants and artists in the Sunset neighborhood. Learn more at Sunset Merchants’ event webpage

Halloween Hoopla at Yerba Buena Gardens  

  • When: Saturday, Nov. 1 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Where: Yerba Buena Gardens, Children’s Garden - 799 Howard Street 

The 25th annual Halloween Hoopla returns with fun for kids under 10 and their families. Enjoy Circus Bella performances, live music, craft tables and a costume parade where every child can join in their Halloween best. Learn more at Halloween Hoopla’s event webpage.    

How to get there on Muni: 8 Bayshore, 12-Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission & 14R-Mission Rapid, 15-Bayview Express, 30 Stockton, 45 Union/Stockton and F Market & Wharves.  
For Muni Metro: All Market Street lines—Powell or Montgomery stations are two blocks away. Yerba Buena/Moscone Station (T Third line) is less than a block from the Children’s Garden.

Drivers: 
 

  • Be alert and watch for children who may be less visible and need more time to cross streets. 

Pro tip: Consider walking, biking or taking public transit to your destination. This way, you can avoid parking and traffic!  

Parents and caregivers: 
 

  • Join your children for trick-or-treating. 
  • Try to be more visible at intersections by carrying a flashlight or light stick or wearing reflective gear. 
  • Remind children to cross at intersections or marked crosswalks. Before crossing, look all ways.  
  • Wear costumes that are light in color to increase visibility. Masks should not obstruct your child’s vision.
