The annual event honors the historic Selma Marches led by King. The demonstrations played a crucial role in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King also helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a 13-month protest of racial segregation on city buses. In November 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the practice was unconstitutional.
