Muni Routle’s official home is now the SFMTA website. It's a Transit Month surprise and the perfect game to play during your next adventure on Muni. It’s also a fun way to master Muni’s expansive system.
Our website is just the right place for that.
Our new favorite game is born
Muni Routle was created in 2024 by River Honer, a software engineer who studied Urban Planning at San Francisco State University. She was living in London at the time and was inspired by Metrodle, a transit-themed spinoff of Wordle that focuses on London Underground stations.
"Muni is very much about the routes, which have iconic names and which locals can trace out from memory," said Honer. "So, I thought this would be a great idea to try.".
Routle gives players five guesses to identify one of nearly 60 Muni routes drawn over a blank map of the city. It pays homage to a system that's long defined life in San Francisco.
"I hope the game inspires people to talk about Muni more,” Honer explained. “Muni is important to the culture of the city. And I wanted to make something to celebrate it."
Since creating Muni Routle, Honer has launched versions in Portland and Seattle. The new games have been well received, but San Francisco continues to have the most users.

We are always looking for creative ways to engage Muni riders. Just under two years ago, we launched the Muni Store, a one-stop shop for Muni merchandise. Muni is a space to connect and make memories. It resonates with people even after they've moved to a new city, just like it did with River Honer. Now living in Berlin, Honer believes it’s more important than ever to use technology to promote local causes.
"Something that I realized this game has done since making it, is contribute to civic discourse around public transit," she said. "Public transit agencies, like sports teams or iconic parks, contribute to city pride."
