Our safety upgrades are helping more people feel comfortable biking and rolling in the city.
Every day, our teams work hard to make sure people have viable options to get around San Francisco. Whether you bike, roll, walk, drive or all of the above, we’re pushing to make your trips safer.
As Bike Month comes to a close, we’re highlighting how our investments in bike safety are making a difference.
These upgrades are helping to prevent risks and make conditions more comfortable. And the results are powerful. We’re seeing bike ridership on the rise and bikeshare trips break records!
Our data shows a:
- 46% reduction in bike close calls with vehicles, and a 15% reduction in collisions where we installed street safety measures.
- 52% increase in bike counts for morning and evening commutes in 2025 compared with 2024.
Read on to learn about our recent milestones in bike safety – and more on what our safety data shows.
Making biking and rolling safer by the waterfront
We were thrilled to join Mayor Daniel Lurie earlier this month to mark the completion of the Terry Francois Boulevard Bike and Pedestrian Safety Project.
The project creates a safer route for people walking, biking and rolling on a busy stretch of the eastern waterfront.
Upgrades include:
- Concrete barriers separating bike lanes from vehicle traffic
- Clearly marked roadway striping and signs to better support people walking, biking and driving
- Narrower driving crossings to reduce conflicts between people driving, biking and rolling
- New asphalt paving throughout the corridor
We want to thank our partners at Public Works and the Port for a great collaboration to get this off the ground!
And we have another recent milestone to share: brand new protected bikeways on Lake Merced and Sloat boulevards. These bikeways make it safer and easier for families, students and visitors to bike and roll around the city’s westside. We're also bringing a protected bikeway to Winston Boulevard. You can check out our new video showcasing the bikeways before you take a ride!
Improving safety through a range of programs
Beyond bikeways, the city’s Slow Streets also make it easier to choose biking or rolling.
The Terry Francois project is one of many investments we have made across the city to improve safety for people biking and rolling.
Our bike network now spans 470 miles – including 50 miles of separate bikeways.
Where we have made safety upgrades, we have seen a:
- 30% increase, on average, in people biking across evaluated locations
- 46% reduction in close calls with vehicles
For details, see our 2024 Safe Streets Evaluation Summary.
Bicycle fatalities in the last five-year period are also down by 70% on average from 2019 – 2023 compared to the previous five-year period.
Our work on bikeways is critical to safety improvements. And our speed safety camera and traffic calming programs also helped to make streets safer.
One year into our speed safety camera program, our data shows:
- A nearly 80% drop in the share of speeding drivers at camera locations
- Roughly 40,000 fewer cases of speeding every day across camera locations
All of these programs make it easier to choose biking and rolling.
Supporting growth in bike ridership and rideshare trips
Our Bike & Roll to School events are one way we empower people to bike and roll safely on city streets.
We’re thrilled to see that people can feel the difference on San Francisco streets.
Our data shows:
- A 52% increase in bike counts for morning and evening commutes in 2025 compared with 2024
- Our Bikeshare program had a record of close to 4 million trips in 2025.
- That’s about 11,000 rides every day!
And one type of green trip is directly supporting another:
- 79% of bikeshare riders used bike share to connect to public transit.
- 18% of riders use bikeshare weekly to connect to public transit.
We’re proud to support strong bike ridership growth, and we are hard at work building on our progress.
