Sunday Spectacular: Festival, Parade and Races

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

With the arrival of summer fast approaching, it’s that time of year when a number of the city’s biggest and most anticipated events start popping up on the calendar.

This Sunday gets the ball rolling! The nation’s fourth oldest foot race, the Statuto Race* will have runners trekking through historic North Beach, while the pride and heritage of the Bay Area’s Sikh community will be on full display with a parade along Market Street** from Second Street to Civic Center Plaza.

(*) The 39 Coit will have a re-route; (**) All Market Street service will have re-routes, use Muni Metro subway as an alternative.

Union Street Festival
Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Union Street between Gough and Steiner streets

Union Street will be abuzz with merchants, artists, food booths, and lots of people this weekend as the 39th annual Union Street Festival takes over six blocks of the fashionable strip with fashion shows, culinary demos, live music, a waiters’ race, wine tasting, and so much more.

Due to street closures and large crowds, public transportation is highly recommended. Service on the 22 Fillmore, 45 Union/Stockton, 47 Van Ness, and 49 Mission/Van Ness routes will drop you within walking distance.

If you’re interested in bicycling over to the festival, there will be valet bike parking at Union and Fillmore streets.

Muni service note: The 45 Union/Stockton will have a re-route, while other routes may see delays due to increased ridership.

Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon
Sunday, 7:30 a.m.
Marina Green

Now in its 35th year, this endurance challenge continues to lure triathletes and adventure seekers by the thousands each and every year. The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon begins with a one-and-half mile swim through 50 degree waters from Alcatraz to the Marina Green for the second leg of the race, which is an 18 mile bike ride. The third and final leg is an eight mile run from the Marina Green to Baker Beach and back.

If you’re looking to cheer on the triathletes as they make their push to the finish line, Muni service on the 22 Fillmore, 28 19th Avenue, 28R 19th Avenue Rapid, and 30 Stockton routes will get you close to the Marina Green.

Muni service note: Service along the race course, the 18 46th Avenue, 29 Sunset, 38 Geary, and 38R Geary Rapid will have re-routes.
