38L Geary travels past the American Conservatory Theatre
The American Conservatory Theatre, or A.C.T.,  has thrilled San Francisco with both classic and contemporary productions since the 1960s. (Photo: SFMTA)

It goes without saying that San Francisco is a mecca for theatre-goers. The American Conservatory Theater, a non-profit theater located at 415 Geary Street, is one of many renowned local venues that have given the city the best of Broadway and beyond. The good news for A.C.T theatre-goers is that the 38L Geary Limited (which becomes the 38R Geary Rapid tomorrow) will put you within walking distance of the theater. Can you think of a more cost-efficient, greener way to  get there?

Did You Know?

  • A.C.T. was formed in1965 in Pittsburgh, PA by theater and opera director William Ball. At the invitation of San Francisco philanthropists, Ball moved the theater company west to San Francisco.
  • A.C.T. was listed on the National Register of Historic places on May 27, 1975.
  • Molière's comedy Tartuffe was the first production staged at the A.C.T. mainstage in 1967.
  • The Conservatory currently offers a wide range of classes and is accredited to grant Master of Fine Arts degrees for actors.
  • Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Elizabeth Banks and Benjamin Bratt are just a few notable alumni of the A.C.T. Master of Fine Arts Program.
  • Prominent alumni of the A.C.T. Young Conservatory include Milo Ventimiglia, Wynona Ryder, Nicolas Cage and Darren Criss, who currently has a recurring role on the hit television series Glee
