New Proposals for an Improved 29 Sunset – Share your Feedback by September 15

Share this:

We now have new proposals to improve the 29 Sunset as part of the 29 Sunset Improvement Project – Phase Two.

These proposals are designed to achieve several goals:

  • More reliability: by decreasing delays, buses will be more reliable. That means fewer gaps between buses, which would decrease crowding and reduce pass-ups of riders.
  • Shorter travel times: average speeds on the 29 Sunset are as low at 5 m.p.h. Quicker trips on the 29 Sunset would get riders where they are going faster. They would also save money by requiring fewer buses to maintain the same level of bus service.
  • More well-furnished and visible bus stops: adding better signage, lighting and shelters to some bus stops would make them easier to find and more comfortable.
  • Improved traffic safety for everyone who travels on the corridor. Six streets on the route are part of the High Injury Network , which is the 12% of city streets where 68% of all severe and fatal traffic collisions occur.

Community Listening Tour, Fall 2024

These proposals were shaped by a community listening tour that we held in the fall 2024. We heard feedback from hundreds of community members through:

  • Meetings with community organizations
  • Tabling at 29 Sunset bus stops in the Bayview, Excelsior, Ingleside and Oceanview neighborhoods
  • A community bus tour with 29 Sunset riders and community members from neighborhoods all along the southern segment of the route

Four photos show SFMTA staff members talking to members of the public on a Muni bus, at the SF State quad, outside of a church and at a presentation.

Staff held feedback session at schools, community events, neighborhood centers and onboard the 29 Sunset bus.

Following outreach for these new proposals, the project team will review feedback and consider changes to the proposals. Later this year, we hope to bring revised proposals for additional community feedback at a public hearing. After a public hearing, we will bring final proposals to the SFMTA Board of Directors to consider them for approval.
