Fall 2023 Outreach Update

This summer, the Sutter Street Quick-Build Project team conducted targeted stakeholder interviews and door-to-door outreach along Sutter Street to share about the upcoming project and gather initial feedback about the community’s priorities for improving pedestrian and bicycle safety and loading and curb use needs. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts with us.

  •  8 direct conversations and presentations with neighborhood organizations, advocacy groups, and senior housing organizations
  • 24 business loading surveys completed in addition to over 50 direct conversations with business owners and property managers to better understand curb use needs
  • Knocked on over 200 business and multi-unit residential building doors and distributed over 120 factsheets
  • Email blasts were opened by over 180 people

WHAT WE HEARD

Challenges

  • Frequent double parking
  • Lack of enforcement
  • Speeding
  • Poor pedestrian visibility at intersections
  • Near miss collisions between pedestrians, cyclists, and turning vehicles
  • Bicyclists and scooter riders sharing the transit-only lane

Opportunities

  • Balancing the need for parking and loading through reallocation of curb space
  • Reduce speeding with a road diet
  • Improving pedestrian safety and access with enhanced intersection treatments
  • Increase safety and network connectivity for people riding bikes and scooters with a parking protected bike lane
  • Maintaining/improving transit-only lane for current and future service changes

CURB SURVEY RESULTS

Of the 25 respondents to the survey:

  • 10 were business owners
  • 83% use a personal vehicle for loading and deliveries
  • 42% have delivery providers or customers who arrive by e-scooter or bicycle
  • 57% load multiple times a day with 12-3 pm being the peak period
  • Courier deliveries peak between 11 am and 2 pm

Though the curb survey has largely concluded, we will continue to accept additional curb survey responses on a rolling basis. Access the survey here.
