Utility work on the Geary Rapid Project, in coordination with San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, is officially complete! Crews connected properties’ water service to the new water main at the last remaining location at Geary and Kearny last week. In total, 1.5 miles of new sewer and almost 3 miles of upgraded water mains were installed along Geary, replacing the previous 100-year-old infrastructure.

Surface improvements managed by San Francisco Public Works are still underway, including utility trench restoration and repaving. Red transit lane treatments are also being installed.

The following two-week construction forecast is subject to change due to weather delays or unexpected field conditions. No work is planned on Monday, September 6 as crews are observing the Labor Day holiday.

Masonic Avenue – Van Ness Avenue
Mondays through Fridays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.:

  • Median work is planned for the weeks of September 7 and September 13 on Geary Boulevard at Buchanan Street.
  • Installation of red thermoplastic colorization in the existing transit-only lanes is planned for the weeks of September 7 and September 13 on Geary Boulevard between Webster and Van Ness streets.
  • Minor punch list repairs within the sidewalk and roadway are planned for the weeks of September 7 and September 13 on Geary Boulevard between Masonic and Webster streets.

Van Ness Avenue – Market Street
Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.:

  • Roadway and sidewalk work are planned for the weeks of September 7 and September 13 on Geary Street between Stockton and Grant streets and at the intersections of Geary at Mason and at Kearny streets.

Some parking will be temporarily restricted in construction zones and traffic lanes will be modified during active work. There may be brief vibrations during sidewalk and roadway excavation.
