L Taraval Public Hearing about Parking and Stop Evaluation

Neighborhoods Affected
Route(s) Affected

At an October 6 public hearing, proposed changes on Taraval Street will be considered so that the SFMTA Board of Directors can vote on them in the coming months. While the hearing is not the final step in the process, the public is invited to join the discussion on Friday, October 6, 2017, at 10:00 am in Room 416 at City Hall. There will also be signs on the street announcing proposed changes at each location.

Parking time limit changes

Based on merchant input, SFMTA is proposing adding unmetered 2-hour time limits to many spaces on Taraval Street that currently have none. Based on our parking study, spaces without time limits on Taraval are nearly full all day with very little turnover, and can’t be used by many customers. The new proposed time limits will be in effect Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. . This will also allow residents to use the spaces overnight if they park after 4:00 p.m. and move their vehicles by 10:00 a.m.

Unmetered, 2-hour time limits Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., are proposed for Taraval Street on the following blocks:

  • 33rd Avenue to 35th Avenue, both sides of the street

  • 35th Avenue to 36th Avenue, south side only

  • 43rd Avenue to 44th Avenue, both sides of the street

  • 45th Avenue to 46th Avenue, south side only

  • 46th Avenue to 47th Avenue, both sides of the street

Also, one 24-foot green-metered, 30-minute parking space Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  is proposed on the north side of Taraval Street at 25th Avenue heading towards 26th street.

Stop Changes

Evaluation of stop changes at 44th (both directions), 35th (inbound) and 17th Avenue (inbound) is underway to determine whether bus stop removals or boarding installations will be recommended by project staff at these locations. This evaluation is based on rider input, merchant input, SFMTA’s stop spacing policy, video of driver behavior at 17th Avenue, ridership, data from the pilot project and traffic counts.

Since staff are still considering both options and the SFMTA Board will ultimately make a decision later this fall, all possible options must  be brought to the October 6 public hearing. Stay tuned for updates on the staff recommendation for each stop in the coming weeks following a completed evaluation.

Additional considerations for these locations include:

  • 44th Avenue stops (in both directions): Clear zones have been added at as a temporary measure after the SFMTA Board approved adding boarding islands at this stop in September 2016.  If stop removal is not recommended by staff, this item will not be brought to the SFMTA Board.

  • 35th stop (inbound): If the pilot is successful it will remain, and staff will not bring this stop removal proposal to the SFMTA Board. If the pilot does not succeed, staff will recommend removing the stop both because it is not possible to build a full boarding island at this location, and because of its close proximity to the Sunset Boulevard stop.

  • 17th Avenue stop (inbound): The Board approved removing this stop in September 2016, but asked that staff review the removal further. Staff will make a recommendation to the Board later this fall. But, like the changes described above, since staff are still considering both options all possible options must to be brought to the October 6 public hearing.
