Montgomery escalator under Construction
Outbound platform escalator out of service at Mongtomery

The Phase 2 of Muni Metro Escalator Rehabilitation Project continues to make progress. Starting on Friday, February 2, 2018, rehabilition will begin on the outbound platform escalator at Montgomery Station. This escalator will be out of service for about four months. Muni customers can use the inbound escalator or the station elevator to access the platform.

Other updates:

  • Work on the outbound platform escalator at Castro Station will be completed the second week of February after four months of construction. The escalator equiped with rainbow lights will resume service to Muni customers.

  • Around mid-February, crews will be working to install rainbown lights to the inbound plarform escalator and the street escalator at the north entrance at Castro. Each escalator will be out of service for two or three days.

  • The inbound platform escalator at Church Station is under construction until April.

  • Concurrently, the inbound platform escalator at Civic Center Station is also receiving rehabilitation. The work will done in June.

  • Work hours for the escalator project is from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays with some weekend work required.

Most of the old escalators at Muni Metro stations have been on the job for over 40 years. They are outdated and easily break down. The new units equipped with state-of-art technology will make the Muni system safer, more reliable and accessible, especially for seniors and customers with special needs.

To ensure safety as well as contain construction debris and minimize noise levels, a wooden barricade is built around the escalator under construction.

Phase 2 of the escalator project began in November 2015. The project is to rehabilitate 17 escalators at Montgomery, Powell, Hallidie Plaza, Civic Center, Van Ness, Church and Castro.
