Street Mural, Decorative Crosswalks Coming Soon to West Portal Station

Starting Monday, July 21, crews will paint a street mural in the horseshoe area outside West Portal Station.

What to Expect

We expect this work to last two weeks. We expect work to take place between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

Muni service impacts:

  • We do not expect any impact to Muni service. Pedestrians entering/exiting the station may be detoured around portions of the horseshoe where roadway mural installation is happening.
  • Crosswalk locations may change while work is being performed at Ulloa Street and West Portal Avenue. Follow posted signage when walking to or from West Portal Station.

Traffic Impacts:

  • There are no expected significant impacts to traffic. However, drivers should use caution and be mindful of any work being done near the intersection.

Parking impacts:

  • To park vehicles containing materials, crews are temporarily reserving several parking spaces at two locations: Lenox Way as well as the north side of Ulloa Street between West Portal Avenue and Claremont Boulevard. Watch for signs.
  • We don’t expect any impact to passenger loading zones or Muni vehicle zones on Lenox Way at Ulloa Street.

Noise impacts:

  • We do not expect significant noise impacts.

In the coming weeks, the remaining horseshoe work will be completed, including:

  • Painting decorative crosswalks at all crosswalks at Ulloa Street and West Portal Station and on Ulloa Street crossing Lenox Way.  Most of this work will take place late at night to minimize disruptions.
  • Adding planters and a bikeshare station to the horseshoe area.

In addition to beautifying the area, these improvements are designed to discourage people from walking across the rail tracks outside of designated crossing locations.

These changes are the final items being implemented as part of the West Portal Station Safety and Community Space Improvements Project. Later this year, we expect to share a draft evaluation on all project changes with a goal of assessing how closely we are meeting the projects goals.
